White Scar Caves

  • Russian Redwood Column
The entrance canopy to White Scar Caves was built to provide a covered circulation area to link the related facilities.
The 15500 x 17200mm structure is based on glulam columns with glulam beams suspended from steel beams above the deck. Decking is 45mm Redwood T & G boards supporting 200mm of turfed soil.
The beams are generally 135 and 185mm x 450mm deep tapering towards the front of the building and were made in Lincoln. Columns max 200mm dia. shaped to 135mm dia. at the ends with Stainless Steel fittings. The unusual configuration of the structure presented some logistical challenges with the columns going in last.
