Project

An elliptical egg shaped auditorium based on geodesic principles. 27m long x 20m wide x 11m high, the surface area = 740m2. 480 ribs form the main framing and are profile cut from 75 x 400 deep (300 net) Kerto LVL.

The 200 cylindrical nodes are connected to the ribs by Cowley connectors.

The eyebrow framing is also Kerto but secondary laminated to achieve the twisting double curved external skin is pressed from 3 layers of grade 4 OSB to receive Titanium cladding.

Thermal insulation and Vapour control is by 100mm sprayed foam which bonds directly to the varying shape and is impervious.

The inner edges of the ribs are straight in conjunction with flat (faceted) lining panels - 12mm Birch plywood which has class 'O' (Envirograf) finish as have exposed parts of the ribs. Acoustic transmission is reduced by 100mm quilt insulation which also supplements thermal. Reverberant sound is treated separately.
