Morticed and Tenoned
The traditional 'Kingpost' truss. Developed in the late 18th century, this style uses little metalwork and largely depends on joints being in compression.
This governs the available range of profiles to Kingpost, Queenpost, Mono pitched or similarly based forms. A classic design which involves large section timbers with spans which can exceed 14m.
For preliminary drawings the proportions shown can be used - rounded up to stock section sizes as appopiate.
Traditionally the thickness would have been a little under half the tie beam depth. For economy current practice would be nearer one third.

King Post, say 6 to 10m span

kingpost

Tie Beam=Span/25    Rafter & Post Ends=Tie/2   Strut & Mid Post=3 Rafter/4

Queen Post, say 10 to 14m span

queenpost

Tie Beam=Span/40    Rafter & Post Ends=Tie/2   Strut & Mid Post=3 Rafter/4

Section sizes and joint details are indicative only. Our service can include the necessary full engineering analysis of individual projects or fabrication only to designs by other professionals.
