Kingsdale School
Project
An unusual feature of the Kingsdale School Auditorium is the structural use of roundwood. 150mm diameter Scottish Larch naturally works best closest to its original form; a shape which does not tend to be practical for conventional structures but is ideal when elements meet at a variety of angles. Spherical nodes in conjunction with Cowley Connectors complement the principle.
The birch plywood infill panels have increased thickness and include a layer of plasterboard for sound reduction. 150mm of insulation quilt also contributes but is primarily thermal.
The building is 24m long x 17m wide and 12m high to accommodate 285 seats. It required 289 ribs, 108 nodes and 1448 plywood panels extending to 750m2
