Folding Doors, Eastlea, London
Project
6.5m high x 8.0m wide folding partitions without head restraint were not considered possible by some experienced door manufacturers. There were times when we felt they might have been right. The key to success was the use of SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) for their fabrication.
6mm Birch Plywood was laminated to both faces of 188mm extra high density EPS. Very light and stiff.
9 hinges in the height were bolted to the steel building frame columns. This ensured positive restraint and shared the weight with the castors incorporated in the four leaves. It is possible to open and close the 1300kg sets single handed although 2 persons cope rather better.
The plywood is finished with a class '1' flamespread control coating and the furniture is generally Stainless Steel.
